Jasper watched as Emmett grabbed on to Maddie, holding her back from the humans behind him. She obviously didn't like it, and when she turned around, Jasper saw his opportunity. "Go!" he hissed to the family behind him, but since they were humans, he knew they wouldn't be able to get them out of there fast enough. He grabbed the family of three, as heavy as feathers, and ran toward the direction of their car. He dropped them off and ran back to Emmett and Maddie, just as the fight was ending. He saw Maddie look toward him, toward the humans who were no longer there, and her face fell.
"You must hate me..." she said. Jasper exhaled, even though he didn't need too.
"No, I don't. I did the same thing, too, after I joined the family," he said, remembering back to one of his first hunting trips with Carlisle back when they lived in Wisconsin almost seventy years ago. "I know know exactly how you feel," he said, walking up to her and putting his arm around her shoulder.
Jasper listened to Emmett's comments about being irresistible, and he rolled his eyes. "Watch it. That's my daughter you're talking about," he said, narrowing his eyes at Emmett, although he knew Emmett would know he was joking.
Just then he heard a faint snap, and, knowing it was the moose that they'd heard back from the house, he stiffened ever so slightly. Out of the corner of his mouth, he whispered to Maddie, making sure Emmett wouldn't be able to hear. "On the count of three, run. He'll have no idea. One...two...three!" he said, turning and running toward the direction of the smell of the moose blood.
He ran, pushing farther and farther, determined to beat Emmett, when he saw the moose in his line of site. He crouched, then sprang, launching himself into the neck of the giant beast. He bit down, feeling the warm blood fill his mouth. He drank for a few good seconds before he was sure that the animal was dead, then stopped, looking up to see if Maddie or Emmett had caught up.
